What is a good software to use for designing signs and other items to be laser cut? Currently using solidworks and autocad.

I would say those are about the most common programs to do that work. I use solidworks pretty exclusively for sheet metal blank design. The sheet metal tools in solidworks work very well and are easy to use.

I'm in engineering so yes to Solidworks and its ilk. For things like signs though, I think these days, Adobe Illustrator is what most graphics people use. There's an open source equivalent called Inkscape that is widely used though I think when things get serious Illustrator would be preferred.

I used to use solidworks and it works great for sheet metal, but due the higher costs I have since switched over to Fusion360. It works great and is easier to teach if you are needing to train new guys.
