I did a search but only came up with one result. Im looking for ideas/designs for building my own welder.
Im thinking about using a car alternator or aircraft generator. How many HP do you need to drive one of these?
What would be a good way to regulate the current output?
If you know of any web pages that would be great. Ive already googled everything and found a couple of pages, but nothing really detailed. Im just looking for as much info as possible before getting started. thanks

i built one a long time ago, i used a aircraft
generator, and, for power used a "onan" two cyl
engine, about 12 hp. i used a "carbon pile" for
regulation, plans were in one of the pop. mechanics or sim mag. it worked but not great, i
sold/traded the generatot to some doofus, and bought a new miller, 225 amp buzz box, i welded
several trailers, a play set and god knows what
else, forget building your own it wiil cost you as much as a new welder, matteo

As soon as I find the time I am going to build a mig power supply to power a Miller wire feeder. I wouldn't bother except for the fact that I have 90% of the parts in my junk drawer. :D
