I have a friend that makes stamp anvils for a print shop. The print shop always supplied their own material.
The source they were using closed down.
What they give as specs are : 1008 steel CR4 .020 thick.
He said this material has a grain like a KSI material, and you have to break it a certain way. If you go across grain it will crack & break .
Does anyone here have a source for this material or more info?
Thanks,
Jack

It looks like you are receiving poor advice. 1008-1010 #4 temper is your everyday sheet metal product that is used everywhere. There are 5 common temper grades for sheet metal #1 being hard, #5 full annealed. #4 temper is your normal temper supplied by steel suppliers. To be assured to get the temper you need; require it on the purchase order from your supplier. #4 temper will form well in any direction. All sheet steel has grain in the direction of rolling. The temper is will control how the sheet will perform in forming or drawing.
