porous welds are good welds

porosity is evidence of strength?...!!

Repair welding using filler of comparable material and hardness (?)
is a good idea.
But now some sales guy dreams up this, poor, poor, poor excuse--to allow
porosity, when customers bitch.

"Welding temperatures required may drive nitrogen gas from the nitrided surface.
Any resultant nitrogen bubbles in the weld are actually evidence of strength....not weakness.
If a softer welding rod were used, it would make subsequent machining much easier. Softer material, however, promotes tool failure. Don't be fooled by the fact that soft welds usually look nicer than hard welds."

Leaving alone the excuse for porosity, they're tiggin' these repairs.

Okay----what about weld induced HAZ--which can generate both softer and harder areas?

Hello JHOLLAND1
Yeah... & when using the arc process, you might want to add some slag inclusions for added strength.:wrong:

You know, 'cuz air is stronger than, well, you know, metal... wait, that doesn't seem right does it?
