We decided to build a grinder based on jeremy schmidt's design, we used a 3 hp 3 phase motor with an imported vfd

3hp motor for a 2" (ish) wide belt???!!

Sure why not. I have a 2.2kw and a 4kw motor to choose from for my build. I might go with the 4kw one because it's 2900rpm and the smalle one is 1450rpm (50hz) and I don't want to deal with a VFD.

I don't see a problem with using Jeremy's design. I mean I plan to do the same, it's a nice design. I made a metric CAD model though since I can't work with inches or get inch materials. 40x40mm bars and 10mm plate.

I can see the OPs build it was modified as well so it's not a pure copy.

I would get a guard around as much of that as possible. Junior machinist can sometimes put parts or fingers in the wrong place, or belt breaks and slaps their face.

Oh, HELL yes! Check the Burr-King lineup.

"Velocity matters". Waaaay more stable that way!

The store-bought El Cheapo's - Grainger "back in the day", Horror-Fright and "Big Box" as well, nowadays - are a b****y nuisance when there's any significant work to be done.
Yup, all our belt sanders are ether shop built or American made and in all cases big horse power and high feet per minute belt speed.
