What's this coating that was underneath the paint of this welding table?

Hey all,

Beginner welder here, hacked together a table yesterday with a craiglist free coffee table and a couple garbage find pipes. It's not pretty, but better than hunching over.

The coffee table top was painted black, and I ground off and sanded the surface to this copper-ish looking under coating. Underneath the coating is steel, you can see a few points where I ground past it in the photo.

Just wondering what the coating is, maybe Cadmium? Copper? Any more details (why it's used, etc) are appreciated too.

thx,

oany

Scrape a little off and burn it in an oxidizing flame. If it’s copper, it will be green, if it’s cadmium it will be bright blue.

(Best to do it in a well ventilated environment)
