Yeah, seafood is an asset alright. The problem is that China has already fished out most of their coastal waters and now Chinese fleets are going around the world strip-mining what until recently were sustainably managed fishing grounds. Worse yet, they've done the same thing at the Galapagos, threatening some rare species with extinction.

Because China faces a food crisis they are scooping up any kind of edible marine creature and NONE get thrown back for being too small.

They totally disregard other nations' sovereign rights in coastal waters.

Another dirty little secret is the source behind much of the low value plastic in those massive floating islands of plastic trash, but that's a subject for another time.

Buck, who are you trying to convince ? Yourself ? This is ridiculous.

Poor quality dams are a good thing because they help to reduce the population when they burst.
Like condo buildings in Florida ? Except three gorges hasn't burst and isn't going to. That's in your head. Has been for a few years now.

I know it would be better to just grind up those disobedient poor people for an additional food source but the other countries would balk at doing that.
"Disobediant" ? What the fuck is wrong with you ?

Just wait until we take over Taiwan and the USA so the world will become a better place with all of them under proper rules.
Better go hide under the bed, Buck. Lotsa commies out there and they're all comin' ta getcha.

Emanuel Goldstein what position do/did you hold..have you ever worked in China as a lathe operator, grinder hand or any common skill or labor job?
Lessee .... lived in six factories and the back room of a restaurant in Beijing for a while, sold the left over vegetables to the old neighborhood ladies at a card table on the street for a couple weeks, that was a kick. Also in numerous houses, sometimes properly registered and sometimes forgot, oops. One place even came with ancestors in a pot, which they'd come and burn incense to on Saturday mornings unannounced while I was in the shower. Installed K&T and Cincinnati and Gleason and Fellows machines mostly, some OKK and Mazak, ick, (actually the OKK's were decent, the Mazaks nothing special and their support both US and China sucks balls), personally got them running and taught people to use them and program them. Wired one shop -- okay, rewired it because the so-called electricians did it all wrong. Redid the air so it worked. Got all their stuff up and running and rebuilt the spindle on an Awea gantry mill. Piece of shit, really, but did cut metal. Rebuilt a lead and involute tester to use for qualifying when we scrounged through a batch of twenty clapped-out #7's to get five or six that would consistently cut AGMA 9's. Got those guys into shaving. Got a 56" bevel planer and a #24 rougher-finisher working in a place that didn't even have a Bridgeport for tooling and maintenance purposes. Angle grinder, anybody ? That was in wondrful democratic traditional Taiwan, what a joke. Walt Disney's version of China. Fixed a Femco wheel turning lathe for a supplier. Set up and ran q/c on automotive wheels. Nobody dead that I know of. Got #22 Gleasons running in production - scariest machine to set up ever. Ran parts on the Awea when no one else would because they were convinced it was no good. Helped redesign the table on a two meter gear shaper for a special purpose. And got laid a lot. Sat in the bottom of the tub daily pouring the tea water out of a thermos over my filthy self after putting together a KT 800 all day, because the hot water heater was broken. Then had to play gan bei gan bei for dinner and snooker in the middle of a village with 10,000 spectators and sadly bent cues and a table that resembled the moon, and I don't even know the rules. Watched fifties movies on hard wooden chairs in the recreation house, and on weekends helped build the brick walls for their new kindergarten. I'm not too bad with bricks. Lived and worked in at least ten different cities and provinces. Plenty I've forgotten. China's good, for me. A zoo, but never a dull moment.

I was a labor and skilled worker and an engineer and did very well, had a good life with owning a house, having good cars, boats, nice vacations, sent my kids to higher learning (one to college and one a high-grade trade school and I am just a dummy who was willing to work..and yes, started a grinding shop. Yes, I would wish such a life to China working people, they deserve as much.
That's great for you but they don't want that life. They don't want your life. They want their own. They don't have the same values. Their country is 2500 years old. It's different. Chinese people are happy with their own country, their own government, their own life styles. They don't want your stuff. They don't think it's cool.

You just keep yours and let them keep theirs and quit obsessing over how speshul you are, how about that ? Here's a hint - they think different than you. And that's their right.

A darn shame, I talked about the 3 Gorges Dam and the conversation went political
Not exactly. More like you pulled this silly garbage about three gorges out your ass so you could snivel about "the poor chinese, if they only had a wonderful country like us" bla bla bla. Please understand this : they don't want your life. They don't want your government. They think it's incompetent and worthless. They don't like it. They have different values which they have gained through two thousand fucking years and your pipsqueak little screeching carries zero weight. None. Interesting to hear about maybe but that's all, not something they want anywhere near their own place.

And they won't even talk about it because what they want to hear is, in order:

    How old are you ?
How much money do you make ?
    Are you married ?
    How many children ?

They can and will converse on those subjects for hours. Those are THE Four Standard Questions Chinese people ask foreigners. That's what they care about. Not the evils of communism now how xi jinping is infringing on their liberties.

Your fixations are about as interesting as, to use the native phrase, "a smelly turd in the shithouse".

Re: Mind you own business Buck, ...
You got that right because you don't know or understand or even try to understand a fucking thing. You've never been within half a planet of the place, why do you keep insisting you know all about it ? This is like hearing a pottery guy from yunan tell us about living in Compton. It's ridiculous. Retarded. Stupid.

Worry about something else. China is fine. They are doing well. They are happy. And the three gorges dam is not going to break. Not in our lifetime, anyhow.

Looks like you have good credentials..I wonder why you get so hostil.

I just made comments about the 3 gorges dam because it is in the news and I have been following the news about it for years, even before it was built... and you turn it into a big fat argument. I could say go f but I'm not going to be that rude.

Because you keep saying this same stupid crap. Reality :

    1) Three gorges dam is not breaking

    2) The people of China are not subserviant slaves to their evil communist masters

After you get that through your head, come back and talk. What you insist on is just garbage. Anyone who had any experience in China would go fruitcake listening to this insanity.

Sure, there is plenty to criticize or laugh about - but none of it is this silly Joe McCarthy nonsense. Absolutely none.

There is, by the way, the equivalent thinking that happens in China. When some dumb student gets himself in trouble (or Charles Ng runs away to HK, ahem) there's always a big "they're picking on us again !" uproar from your counterparts in the middle country. That's equally ridiculous, and I try to explain that to those people when it happens. With about equal luck, I guess.

You guys are all nuts, both sides, that's all there is to it.

A whole lot of people involved in USA manufacturing over the past so want to think China is bad.
We need an enemy to blame and cut down at any time we can find it. This makes us feel better.
The dams in Mid Michigan did not work so well with big rain. Wonder how many decades before these "lake front" properties back to value.

Probably a waste of time because there's nothing people hate more than having their illusions shattered. But Buck, if you'd like to graduate from the John Birch Guidebook to the Godless Evil Commie People's Republic to the real world, try here

Make a Wish (2021) Episode 1 Eng Sub Streaming HD | Dramacool

this is a very low-budget teevee show that I think came from Qingdao (home of the third-rate beer). It's so low budget that there's no money spent on costumes, movie or teevee stars, sets, expensive cameras, postproduction, or props. They just filmed it by walking around the city. You can see what Qingdao actually looks like (if I got the city right, certainly looks like it.)

People, too. Goofy haircuts, no face smoothing, probably had the local girl from Sephora come over to do makeup. Which is what makes it valuable if you'd like to see what people and living conditions in China are actually like. Pretty realistic (With one small exception, but what the heck. Doesn't eveyone have a cat in the house ?) Quite funny, imo. But I'm easily entertained, I even read xxyyzz's posts here occasionally.

It's aimed at young people, if you are too old and crotchety better stay away.

Lots of crappy popups but y'all probably want english subtitles, so just blast them away. Just keep clicking, it'll run eventually. Nothing from the CCP that I could detect (Little Snitch is good at catching spyware and tracking and other crap).

Go for it, Buck. If you dare.

Emanuel Goldstein, I think you want to bait me into a never-ending argument about ideology that what you or I think will never change what government will do.

I think the 3 Gorges Dam may be defective and poorly built. I can think whatever I wish, so I will continue to seek news about it (that dam) and keep my thoughts to myself.

My visits over in China, the only cats I recall were the plastic one's in the window waving it's pawl. Any real one's usually wound up on someone's dinner table when they got to a certain age. But wait! They do have a particular variety of cats people have as pets. The carry a very hefty price tag!

Pretty much what I expected. You will avoid any evidence of reality like the plague. You don't know doodly-squat about China, refuse to look at proof to the contrary, why you have to continue with this nonsense is beyond me. It's crap. And "ideology" has nothing to do with it. You're the one who has ideology stuck up your butt.

I think the 3 Gorges Dam may be defective and poorly built. I can think whatever I wish,
And I think your house is built like shit and is a menace to society and should be torn down. Of course, I never saw it and don't even know where you live but hey, just like you, facts make no difference ! Whoopeee !

Oh bullshit. There's tons of feral cats in any park, and people feed them. I think it's a bad thing, wild cats kill birds, but I'm not in charge. It's also a very dangerous thing, rabies is rampant among wild animals, two foreigners have died of rabies that I know of, petting stray cats is a dumb thing to do.

And people don't eat cats, that's a flat-out lie. Not appreciated.

But wait! They do have a particular variety of cats people have as pets. The carry a very hefty price tag!
Ja, the best quality will run you a nice Ferrari or Lambo, plus a house, clothes, bank account, etc etc. But you can get cheaper ones for much less, and I think the functioning parts are just as good. Would be interesting to do a wide-ranging comparison test

you speak for all 1.3 billion of them? Know all the cultures throughout that vast and varied land?

Some quick searching suggest there's lot of cats eaten in China. Shenzhen area even has cat meat restaurants

The cat thing is likely way overplayed for bleeding hearts. Should one add dogs?
Around the world just about everything not human gets served up.
Is it different than a chicken or cow that you raised from zero? Slaughter of lambs?
Everyone wants to eat, few want to know the how.
Is it okay to eat big cats "tiger, lion, jaguar, leopard"?

Of course you are right, as an illustration of your principle I can confidently say that Americans like to lure adolescent boys into their apartment, drug them, ass-rape them, drill holes in their heads to pour acid into, dismember their bodies and keep the parts in the refrigerator. Or maybe bury them in the basement. Common as hell, I read about it in the papers.

Know all the cultures throughout that vast and varied land?
I have been around enough to say that eating cat is not a common thing, the way 4GSR tried to imply. Horse dick, sheep balls, donkey, deer penis wine, turtles snakes eels, owls, endangered species of various types, and in some places dogs, yes, but cat, no.

Eating dog is way more common in our best-beloved democratic freedom-loving Korea, by the way. It's a picnic to find dog in Korea, you actually have to look pretty hard, and mostly be in the north, to find a place that has dog in China. Plus it doesn't taste that good, imo.

On a statistical basis, in China, no one eats cats.

Some quick searching suggest there's lot of cats eaten in China. Shenzhen area even has cat meat restaurants
Some quick searching indicates that Canadians like to watch black guys fuck their teenage daughters, too. I mean, there's popup ads all over the place showing that ...

No, and it's illegal but unfortunately superstitious people trade in body parts for "medicinal purposes." Traditional medicine really does suck. Admittedly western medicine has gone overboard on drugs but eating a ground-up tiger penis in the hopes that it make your saggy-baggy mean vicious wife look hot again, that's worse than unfortunate, it's hydroxychloroquine-level ignorance

At least they don't hunt whales for ego like our allies the Japs do ... or chase down and kill wild horses from helicopter like our western states friends do. I have to admit here that one of my recurring dreams is to chase Ken Salazar from a helicopter, with an AK-47 (I'm not a very good shot, maybe a shotgun on full auto would be better.)

It's kind of discouraging, really, that so-called intelligent people will avoid looking at reality. Sure, teevee shows are glamorized and artificial, but the locations, the clothes, the attitudes, the basic life style is right there for anyone with an ounce of curiosity to see. But y'all would rather pull this cat-eating crap out your asses .... Mcgyver here took more effort to "prove" that people eat cats in shenzhen (try an internet search for "genuine Gucci scarves" and believe that ?) than he would seeing what Qingdao really looks like.

QT: [people trade in body parts for "medicinal purposes." ]

My neighbor at Kellyroadcamp (my hunting preserve) was in the business of selling body parts to universities..for medical reasons.
But he was also selling tainted body parts as good ones and got caught. Yes like with aids, TB, and whatever.

He was like a millionaire, and then got 9 years in prison and lost all his property perhaps 400 acres.

Yes university kids were working with tainted body parts and not taking the needed precautions.

Yes, I could eat dog, rat, horse, seal if I had to, it is all just meat. hope never get to that.

My friend Lou wanted to back to Denmark and have a Horse Steak.

I would like to try seal..likely have to go to Toronto to do that.

wait, .22 x 5 is 1.1 oK a little off still as we are looking for USA 1.2

    So 1.2 (US) / .22 (Chins) = 5.45455

so figure the USA has about 5,45455 times the arid lands of china. that is a lot. The USA ould be dead broke and we could still eat. Some might have to eat beets and asparagus but still eat.

Likely some new-fangled plant bug and we all could be starving

oH darn..here is another site with different numbers, So just Ignore the whole subject, I don't feel like re-calculating.
It giving the USA .48 and China .09 (.48 / .09 = 5.3333) USA having 5.3333times more farmland than China..

I would like to see a good portion of the world's military money diverted to helping out poor food countries. The ones that have a handle on overpopulation, say less than 2.2 kids per family average.
China was starving back in the mid-60s and that was a shame, but with so many people it would be difficult for the other countries to do much about it..

Pete was kind of pulling your leg. I believe the word you meant was 'arable'. China does have a bunch of arid land, too, but they mostly use it for tourism

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to work very well. It just encourages people to breed like rabbits and make the problem worse. One child policy is a better idea.
