I was trying to order a 10tpi right hand acme insert to fit my Valenite "top notch" holder. The sales persons said Valenite doesn't make that size anymore and they recommend an 8tpi....HUH, am I missing something here??? Can you use an 8tpi for a 10tpi thread?

No, you can't use an 8tpi to cut a 10tpi thread, unless YOU grind the insert to the correct 10tpi size. Might try looking for a Kennametal insert...I believe they "invented" the top notch system.

The salesman is FOS. But, you can use a 12 tpi, and use your compound or your control to offset, and chase the thread out larger.

Depending on what size Top Notch you have (3 or 4) Kennametal has 10tpi in each. NA-3R10 or NA-4R10 a good grade to go with would be KC5010 in either one. And yes, KMT did first patent the Top Notch system. If you go with Sandvik you have to change over top clamps to accomodate their Top-Lock style. Too much hassle.
