Folks,
How would the square corners have been machined or cut on this part 100 years ago?

The rectangular pocket could be done by forging or cold forming, if it is all one piece. It could be silver brazed from two pieces.

Clean it out really good and you can probably see enough tool marks to figure it out. It was probably cut as far as possible with an endmill or plain horizontal cutter and then the corners cut out with a diamond point chisel, just like squaring the corners of a hinge on a wooden door after routing.
