OT - Ebay User ID Kept Private

Perhaps this has been waded thru before, in reference to the bidder list on ebay auctions.

But what legitimate purpose can this have, other than to "simulate" wild bidding action (= highly desirable item) or artificially get the bid price into the range where the seller doesn't have to monkey with reserve pricing??

What, you can't be spammed by false second chance offers by unsavory types picking up on the bidder list? (I feel better already

)

Avoiding second chance spoofs is the only reason I can think of.

I did have a guy get a spoof off one of my auctions a while back and he got taken for about $800.00. I would say the threat is real.

It is so that Al Babin can list an item and have private bids, then go over to his daughters I.D. (Pizzalee??? or whatever she is) and run up his own items.

Ebay doesn't get wise this way because no one can turn them in .

I have seen it done for a few reasons.

1) when selling things that someone may be embarrased to be bid on.. Porn/perverted items. ebay has a whole section of that with a huge # of listings. Most never see it but its there, they just hide it from accidental discovery.

2) When selling a valuable item that other dealers may also have. Say your selling something that should bring 1k. Bidding gets up to $1100 and suddenly your bidders are getting emails from other dealers who have the same item. "hey i saw you bidding on this, i will sell you one for your bid of $1k". This happens ALOT in competitive markets.

I have seen it done for a few reasons.

I asked one where, exactly said tractor was located.
Hungary! will ship Fed Ex.
Same old story, gift to his bro. (he loved it) bro. died, etc.
To get on bidding list he required ALL your info!

Last auction I was at I met a guy who bought a couple of misc. items. We were talking about some of the of folks overbidding when I mentioned something about being able to find these things cheaper on ebay. He abruptly turned to look at me and said no one in their right mind would use ebay as it's full of crooks. He then proceeds to tell me his story of loosing $4K on a Second Chance Offer. I never, never thought that there were people out there who would really fall for bogus Second Chances. It opened my eyes a little about crooks actually making money doing this.

A friend of mine got took for over $2,000 with a second chance offer. I would say they can make real good money doing this. There are a million scams out there and they aren't doing it just for fun.

Only one that I know of ... it keeps me from bidding on that item :eek:

Looking at who bids, when they bid, and how often is a way to see if an auction is worth following. If a listing has a couple of newbies bidding against each other, it isn't worth my time. To me, that information is essential.

RE: Second Chance Offers. Most of my losing bids are one increment behind the winner & often many dollars more than bidder number three. I'd rather wait for the relist and get it cheaper

Crooks arn't stupid . If a scam didn't work often enough to be profitable then it would die out quikly.
