Rock nipper (done for now)

This isn't as nice as that hammer someone posted a few weeks ago, but...

This is the rock nipper I built; when you get a mineral specimen that's just a bit too big, and is too fragile for whanging with a hammer (my normal behavior) you want to nip it. I've only seen these for a couple of hundred bucks, this cost me about $25 or so. Not real pretty; I used just about an entire welding rod on the nut, for example.

Oh, the "for now" is because I already want to modify it. 1/4" chisels seemed like a good idea, but they are too small. I'm going to redrill the holes and use 3/8" chisels.

Right, 1/4" drill rod, ground to a chisel tip. Like I say, I'm going to up it to 3/8". The set screws are just to keep the chisels in place, not load bearing, if you will. The handle is just a cheapo chinese tap wrench (the most expensive piece of the thing, about $10), I rough-ground the end of the allthread to a square.
