I have access to outdated designs or damaged surgical instruments (slaphammers, various types of screwdrivers, impactors, etc. I can't help but think that they can have a new life in my wood shop. I suspect they are stainless steel but have no idea of the grade(s) are. There is a wide range of surface finishes even on tools with the same model numbers. Is there a way to distinguish the various stainless steels in a home shop? Does that even matter if I'm thinking of converting them to chisels, flathead screw drivers etc? Thanks ahead of time for any ideas or experience.

Most all surgical instruments are either 17-4ph or Custom 455 stainless. Although I have seen some items made out of 316 stainless and even Titanium, usually handles.
