    Default 1020 v's 1045

    This is like "how long is a piece of string" but..............

    What are the main advantages & disadvantages of both 1020 & 1045 ? Is there any main reasons why each one is used ??

    I know you are going to ask about the applications but are there any generalizations ??

    Both are "plain carbon steels"

    1020 has nominally 0.2% carbon content, cannot be directly hardened but welds superbly. Its advantage is that it is relatively cheap and perfect for welding. Disadvantages would be it isn't especially strong, has to be carburized before hardening and is not known for "free" machinabilty

    1045 is its brother. Due to its 0.45 % nominal carbon content, it can be directly hardened. This higher carbon content makes welding it more trouble than 1020. So its advantage is that it can be hardened to higher strenght levels than 1020. Since it has "more" it costs more. It also is not a "free" machining steel.

    Where I work, I can order conveyor steel of hot-rolled "mild" which is basically your 1018 or 1020. Or, I can pay a little more for "high carbon" which is basically 1045. In the wear application, the 1045 with no other special hardening will outlast the 1018 by about a rough factor of 5.
