Hi there,

I am in the process of getting quotes for machining a bicycle part in either 4130 or 1045 steel. Some machinists are suggesting using 40CR steel in place of my specified materials. Does anyone know how this alloy compares? Weldability? Strength?

I don't think anyone will be able to really help without more info, but why not 4140, it's strong and welds up nice.

Looks like it's equivalent to US AISI 4142 steel, and weldable with appropriate technique: How To Weld 414 Steel | WELDING ANSWERS

If you don't need to weld it how about 1141 (Stressprof)?
