4340 steel

i was just reading that nickel and cobalt has been replaced in 4340 steel by tungsten to make the cheaper eglin steel (es-1).

have you ever "seen" cobalt in 4340?

somehow its messed up, as far as i can see you take 4340, take out nickel, add cr, si and tungsten and get es-1.

I didn't properly understand your question first time around, my apologies.

Yeah it looks like a mistake, the composition of the steel is not the focus of that paper and looks as though it's mentioned only in passing.

If you look up Eglin steel the composition doesn't match what's stated there either.
