9" south bend power feed issues

Hello,

I have a 9" south bend model A lathe. The lathe has been hardly used as in great condition. Although for some reason the lever to engage the cross slide power feed will not engage. The lever is locked in the the center position.

The half nut engages as the longitudinal power feed works fine.

Any suggestions what may be causing the lever to remain in the one position? The lever is not jammed and moves slightly, just will not engage in other positions.

Some insight might help before removing the apron to look inside.

Half nut lever is for THREADING ONLY

Get the HN lever positioned where the HNs ARE NOT closed around the lead screw

NOW - put three position lever in the position that allows cross feed VIA THE APRON CLUTCH

LONG feeds are ALSO via this clutch and the appropriate position of the three position lever

TO REPEAT - FEEDS are VIA APRON CLUTCH - never via the half nuts

This older 9A has the "knob" lower center for APRON CLUTCH

I think the spring in the clutch might be worn. Possibly the clutch had been engaged sitting all those years?
