Any chance to repair a 5C collet closure tube?

I am trying to give a collet closure to a guy trying to fix up a Hardinge TL from the last of debris I have from the lathe.
Problem is the last 1/2” is stripped out so I don’t think he can use it.
What’s the deal- just like I think:
Buy some appropriate tube, thread and fix the old closure parts to it?

Are there any half measures that make sense?
The only thing I can think of is buying a cheap bit of tube from some 5C fixture- chop back and weld on..
I know- hardly worth the effort to fight with and get poor alignment after all the effort.
Weld on thicker wall tube- turn down and thread would work slick?
Just turn it over to the guy and let him deal with it?
I sure don’t need another even small project but hate to give something over that the guy will find himself unable to deal with.

Trboatsworks, sir
Turn the large end back and shorten the funky threads.. I think you should have enough clearance to do that.. Chase the treads with a 20tpi thread file.. IF that doesn't work just get some tubing and make a new draw tube.. It really isn't a hard job..
Stay safe

Common problem. Easy solution. Vendors sell the tube already threaded in several different lengths.

Order the next length up, do a decent job of cutting it at the non-threaded end.

Ah- ok.
I will give him the heads up that he can buy a stick of tube to fix and leave him to it.

Thanks

I had to make a couple of Van Norman mill tube type collet closers and repair another. You can weld on a stub and cut it down, internal thread or you can make the entire tube. I have done both.

I have made several repairs/extensions for the collet draw tube. I used a piece of iron pipe that was the right size, turned it, bored it, cut an external thread on one end to fit the old tube, threaded the inside and joined the two pieces. I think I used Loctite 271, but silver solder will also work.

If the old threads are unusuable, make a lap joint and silver solder together.

Have never had a problem with thread pulling out.

The 'old codger' on the YouTube video sounds just like Andy Rooney and his video quality is akin to 'shake-rattle-roll school of videography'.

Bill- I did look about.
Seems there is always some crazy codger...

Plenty of ways for the guy I am giving this to.

It isn't HARD. Any decent plumber or HVAC laddie would laugh over it.

But 5C threads see a lot of wear, the ones you are looking at usually had their share and a bit more, already, are damned seldom in very good condition.

I liked the simplicity and the NEW threads, and "factory-cut" by someone good enough to stay in business at it.

"Liked" past-tense as I gave away the last drawtube under-roof a year or three ago. 100% "nose closer" now, several types of them.

No spindle-bore space budget eaten AT ALL, no care as to how LONG a tube is needed, no mucking about at the hard to reach arse-end, backside anchorage area, even to go onto a lathe of a different race altogether.

So I ain't "going BACK", neither, play on words but not play on the arse-end of the lathe intended!

:)

I have fixed two collet tubes by having my welder friend build up the threaded area with weld. Then I rebored and retreaded the threads. It worked great”
