Availability of 4 or 6 spline shafting, 18" long, 2" diameter in surplus market

I need some "largish" diameter splined shafting for rotary power transmission.

I see mcmaster sells it in a 4' length, for $370.

Anyone aware of where I might find something in the 1 1/2 to 2" diameter that is at least 18" long in the surplus market? I have to stick with large body splines because the mating bore will be laser cut, no broaching. So I don't want automotive involute spline.

Any suggestions welcome!

Using a 3" hob to cut a 10-spline shaft I get about 3/4" per minute. Add an inch on each end to your face width then an hour for setup, multiply by the hourly rate and that's about what a job shop should charge you. Might be as cheap and definitely easier to just make the shafts you want and have teeth cut in them.

You're in Michigan, should be no problem but if not I know a few places in commie californee that can do it for you.

Oh. A 2" four-spline ? Eeek. How about ten ?

i don't much care, as long as a 3/8" laser cut piece will mate with the spline without too much slop. I just need a dual shaft shredder to break down some heavy plastic with brass inside it so i can feed it in to a small hammer mill.

Honestly, if I can't find the splined shaft, i may just use square CRS.

I could just cut four keyways in a round shaft and it would work, but it's one of those things where if i can buy off the shelf surplus, i'd prefer to do that. the only reason i'd like to have at least four keys is to time the teeth, so i don't have to worry about having different part numbers on the cutters.

What about agricultural PTO shaft? Almost square shaft, just rectangular enough to prevent getting the u-joints out of time.

If you need to time the teeth and want to make it foolproof, then putting four or five keyways into a round shaft would be pretty easy and if you made them asymmetric, then it would make sure your female parts would be properly timed.

I would look at either ag or automotive drivelines and parts. Something off the shelf is better than custom.

Large shredders are usually made by stacking the cutter wheels and spacers on hex shafts.

I think I’ll just use hex! I don’t know why I didn’t think of that.

Thanks!!!

When its termite time its troll time!
How can you explain, no threads of your own? Not a single one! No photos, but you certainly explain to others how to post them!
You actually promised in the past to post photos when questioned about it. But now! Your photos will cause others to go bezerk and spread outrageous lies! Those are your own words.
Now termite your little charade is up, throw all the fits you want. You have already called me a criminal, a drug addict, and also insane, because I, and others have caught you lying.
So, get those photos up troll boy!

I checked and surplus center only carries splined shafts up to 12". Assuming you are laser cutting steel about 1/4" thick and have a competent operator I don't see any issues with using finer pitch splines. I've cut a 1/4" disk to fit around a 1/2" keyed shaft without issue. Tolerance is a few though. If you need half inch laser cut that's a bit different but 3/16" wide splines or larger should be doable.

Hex works fine as well, the only inconvenience is mounting bearings. I wonder if there are any off the shelf parts to adapt hex to bearings.

Nevermind, I looked it up, they make bearings with a hex shaped ID.

Thermite must be pretty cute, considering the amount of times you ask him to send pictures.

I don't know about you being a criminal, drug addict, or insane (maybe insane), but you sure are annoying.

Also, I'm sure Thermite enjoys the attention. If you want him to do something you'd probably have to /stop/ paying attention to him.

Also square and octagonal?

Figure ten years will do?

Wouldn't want to step on anyone's sensitive little baby-toes, would I?

Sticking to the topic at hand, ag PTO stuff (as mentioned above) is commonly available at retail anyplace that has a Tractor Supply store. Not stellar pricing, but you can hold it and brainstorm ideas with a variety of assemblies and repair parts on display. It's also up to the task of shredding things. Just because you have a shop doesn't mean you have to start from a raw chunk of steel for everything.

Trust me...if I can start with a pre-made shafting, I'd prefer to.

I couldn't find anything longer than a 12" stub shaft.

I would like 12" of active spline, then bearing journals, then a journal for my gears. All told, it's 18" give or take.

I browsed the farm shop yesterday...they have six inch pieces attached to a u joint usually. I usually know what I can get from the farm store.

umm, snow ? Do you have access to a lathe and a mill ? You'd be done with the job before this thread is over, if you just got started :)

If you want regular splines, you can buy form cutters or even have a special ground easily. Or you could do a single long keyway, or a few keyways with asymmetric spacing for your timing, or pretty much anything you want. Even having a local shop with a hobber wack you out some teeth is not expensive for this. This is an easy job ....

I'm just going to use hex shaft.

But in my experience, jobs that seem like they are only going to take the length of the thread end up costing me money because they seem too easy.

And "easy jobs" right now at local shops still cost serious cash, if you can get them done at all. I've had a steel order at a service center for going on three weeks that I'm calling to cancel because I'm sick of waiting on it...I'll just order it from the laser cutter and have zero fitting work when it arrives.

If your “farm shop” can’t come up with a piece of 1-3/8 6 spline pot shaft or 1-3/4 21 spline shaft, then they are a poor excuse for a farm shop. I run an agricultural supply shop and those are super common shafts with couplers readily available from multiple suppliers in a variety of flavors.
