Avatar guidelines

Avatars should be machinist, or manufacturing related in some way, or a photo of yourself.

And note I said "machinist", not "machinery".... a photo of your favorite car or motorcyle is not acceptable, but a machine tool photo is ok...since that is "machinist" related.

Looks like an explosion to me...this could be objectionable, I cant tell what yours is so how do I know its machining related?

It's pretty much as machining related as it gets.... the genesis of machine tools.... a painting of the first production iron foundry in the world... where what we discuss here all started.

Most folks that know machine tool history would recognize the famous painting at Ironbridge, UK.... if the uneducated don't, that's their problem, not mine.

Gotta admit, I didn't know what Milacron's avatar was for a while. Then a thread came up touching on the topic and I became "educated" so to speak. Wisdom is that hard earned quality that tells oneself from the gut up that 'Milacron didn't pick out just any 'ole avatar' (especially since he's making a major point about them).

Back when the old forum software was up, I would scroll through the threads and I would come up on his avatar and it was in vivid red and orange. It had the look of the bowel's of he!! to me. A real commanding thing and an intense visual cue. You could fast scroll through a thread and instantly recognize his posting just from his avatar's color scheme. Since the software change, the color is much more neutral and my ingnorance of the actual painting (i.e. googling procrastination) has kept me from determining which color rendition is factually correct if either (I do like the vivid red and orange better though IMHO).

If you had never seen this painting before, there is no way one could have figured it out. Once you had though, it is instantly recognizable. Kind of off topic but my dad was a B-58 bomber pilot. Early in his training, they would project up on the wall silouettes of friendly and enemy planes of various sizes and orientations for say 1/10 of a second. The complaints poured in that this was way too short of time to identify the object. They then projected an image of a nude female up on the wall for something like 1/100 of a second. Instant identification. No more complaints.

It's only dime-sized, but I'll take a wild guess that it's the ex-Workington Bessemer converter at Kelham Island, Sheffield. Or Mr Gumby.

Milicron. I imagine you want me to change my current M1 avatar? It was more of a product of the trade. I worked in shops that made various parts for military vehicles. If so ill start to look for a new one.

On that note. There are manufacturing forums as well as general machining forums. Manufactureing might be considered broad by some. I'm involved or have been involved in everything from drafting to machinining, proto-typing, and even marketing of the manufactured products. Can it pertain to any of the above? Or still just a machining picture of some sort? Can we have our product logo if we machined or manufactured and developed it?

I don't know, machining operations make a fair amount of scrap.
That M1 can pretty much make anything into scrap faster than
any CNC ever built, it just does it a little different.

Milacron's avatar (the painting) was just featured on a History channel "Modern Marvels" show on metals, if anyone wants to try to catch it in it's full screen glory.

On a side note, something I learned from the show was that the Romans used to season their food and drink with LEAD, because they liked the "sweet" taste...
