I have a Birmingham YCL-1340gh. The thread dial does match up every time. To thread you have to keep it locked in and just run it back and forth. A friend of mine had one new 30 years ago and the same issue. He contacted the importer and they sent him different gears an it fixed it. His lathe is long gone and I was wondering if anyone knew what gears I need? Or how to fix it.

8TPI, 32 teeth. I’ve only run old monarch and south bend lathes up till now. The thread dials are 1-4 on them and this one is 1-8.

something is slipping somewhere...the 32 gear is correct for 8tpi screw.

If it works sometimes but sometimes not look for a sheared leadscrew pin or that your halfnuts are in fact engaging the leadscrew fully.

Less likely since it sees no load is the trhead dial gear slipping on its shaft...but also worth checking...I'm sure you checked but do be sure the thread dial is staying engaged to the leadscrew too.

The thread dial gear should be keyed to the thread dial shaft, make sure it’s still there.
