Unconventional but I did have some success with a magnetic pull off test, elcometer was the brand, used for coating thickness but it definately stuck better to thicker ferrous substrate, it’s basically a magnet and spring thing, not neodymium! Just plain old iron, fairly weak
I don’t understand the ultrasonic unless there’s a big lamination in the casting, there should be three spikes on screen if it is though I don’t know how good your head is, wallpaper paste makes a good contact media at a push.

A couple of rare earth magnets should hold your display I would think. Possibly the scale as well if you use a few very small locating pins.

I appreciate all of the feedback thus far.

So it sounds like the easy button options are gone.

After some (very specific) searching, I found online where one vendor says my model of ultrasonic tester is not compatible with cast iron "due to its big crystalloid composition". I don't have access to a rental, although that would be nice. I did find another ultrasonic tester (SSEYL UM6500) that specifically lists cast iron (nodular cast iron, and gray cast iron). I will see if this works.

Turning out to be some rather expensive holes...

The tips you guys have provided may still come in handy if I can't find a spot thick enough to do a blind hole.
