Buckable chuck ...

Say what? This is a Southern expression for when you put a part on a chuck and zero out the alignment. We are putting together a collection of good machinist slang/expressions? Have you got any?

We are here for the slang, not sarcastic mofo's! Otherwise, let 'em rip!

Anything lathe or grinder-related would be appreciated.

When boring a hole for a nice slip fit of a pin, I always say after the last adjustment on final pass with fingers crossed "its gonna fit like a Trojan" I hope..

Its not slang its the way we talk.. I don't know if that is the kinda thing you were looking for?

Southern? I don't think so. It came from Buck being the first chuck company to offer a 3 jaw scroll chuck that could be dialed in.

I once heard a machinist say "fits like a finger in a butt"...'course, he was Italian....

Well thou and tenths are the obvious ones.
Tenths are really ten thousandths of an inch, if you're talking to a machinist of course :D

Ok..so why didn't I see that coming?? Didn't know they had dinky ones? Thought it was one size fits most? :)

A few Lancashire ones:

'rack o't th'eye' (pronounced 'rack ot thigh') meaning something looks good by eye or has been made by eye without measuring tools

'f*** with the dick you've got' meaning don't complain about not having the perfect tool for the job

'thrutch' putting some weight behind something - straining at it, pushing a machine hard etc...

many more ...

Hot dog down a hallway - very loose fit

Wear the cape - we had a costume superman cape around the toolroom presented to whoever was the hero of the day or week

scoshe - little more than a few tenths, less than a few thou

hhmmmm....why does 'slang' seem to always cater to the lowest common denominator? I like cussin' as much as anyone but I guess the thrill of introducing Asses and Genitals into everyday speech wore off a few decades ago.
