I want to wind a 3/8" coil which is 8 threads per 3 inches or 2-2/3 TPI. My blacksmith has a Clausing 4902 which, like most lathes in that class, only goes down to 4 TPI. Is it possible to use change gears to run the carriage at 2-2/3 TPI?

need a 1:1.5 ratio between spindle and leadscrew. probably not hard to figure out.

or a 3:1 ratio if the leadscrew is 8 tpi. or some other ratio if you have a quick change gear box.

3/8" wire is likely stout enough to push the carriage along with the coil, no need for gearing provided the bushing(s) is close to the mandrel you're coiling the wire on. run the lathe backwards so the torque needed to coil the wire is lifting the carriage off the lathe and i suspect it will push the carriage forwards without deciding to coil over itself.
