I'm in the position to purchase 2 different Colchester mastiff lathes for $1000 a piece. One appears to have stuffed spindle bearings. But everything else looks ok. And the other has good spindle bearings and is in even better condition. But is missing one of the gear shaft assemblies Beds on both look perfect. No ridges or massive dings. Everything slides smoothly. And they come with Chuck's tooling and steadies.
Electrically ok
These are in Australian dollars. And from 2 different sellers.

Currently I only have a smaller 1m runmaster lathe. And no really use for something quite this size. But I'd enjoy the challenge of getting one good lathe from the 2.
Logistically moving them around is a nightmare. And will probably cost me as much as the lathes themselves.
Is it worth it or am I dreaming.

What's a lathe like this worth in good running condition?

I'd make enquiries regarding replacing the " gear shaft assembly ", whatever that means. " Nobilla " in Stevenage in the UK specialise in buying and selling used " Colchester " lathes and sell both new and used spare parts. I've dealt with them in the past and I've found them very helpful and reasonable price wise. You may find you can get what you need for less than $1000.

Regards Tyrone.

1000 AUD (500GBP) is not bad deal even for the tools, chucks and steadies alone.

Killisch: Lathe prices wary a lot depending on area but IIRC everyone is complaining how expensive used machinery is in Australia so these seem (very)cheap based on that.

Nobilla quoted me £1000 for a second hand matrix clutch and £800 for a used headstock lube pump, four times what I could buy a new hydraulic pump for which fitted with minor faffing being external

That's a lot. Maybe they've got greedy these days. It's 10 years since I last bought something from them but they were pretty reasonable then.

Those prices you quote are roughly twice what I would be willing to pay for " used " components. I don't think I'll be recommending them in future. There's a difference in making a decent profit and screwing people.

I've seen things like this happen before in small companies were ownership changes hands, son takes over from dad etc.

I once worked at a place that was taken over by " Babcock & Wilcox ". The first thing they did was contact all the existing customers to inform them of large price hikes, take it or leave it.

Given the equipment we were making had lead times of up to 2 years the customers who's equipment was nearly completed had to stump up double the contracted price or start all over again.

Some people can be pretty ruthless in business.

Why not take the headstock cover off the one with bad spindle bearings and take a look for internal damage, if it's ok then buy it for parts for the other lathe, $2K for a complete Mastiff is cheap.
