Cutting Gummy Materials Research

There's an interesting paper from APS about cutting gummy materials. They found that surface coatings as common as glue or Dykem can change chip formation. Here's a link to the article:

most just spray on a oil like M-1 or WD-40 as its easier to wipe off part when done

Pretty interesting. Thanks for the link. Tom did you even bother to read the article? They are applying ink to the surface then cutting it right back off. No need to remove it.

I would also note that the tool geometry did not appear to be optimal for this test. Sure looks like that cutting edge is at a dead neutral rake in the video. I would be curious to see the results with varying tool geometry.
