D1-5 Taper turning

Turning a taper to fit a D1-5 spindle taper.
Is the male and female taper the exact same size?

The big end of the taper adapter is somewhat larger than the big end of the spindle taper to allow some stickout.

Yes, the TAPER is the same, the diameters differ. You want 2-4 thou clearance before turning the camlock pins. Some familiarity with worn out adapters will inform you that the adapter's taper should be very slightly different. A hair tighter on the small dia.

This fellow (O.P.) sounds like he's pretty green in terms of D1 tapers. It is a good idea to clarify that the .002" clearance mentioned is to be between the mating faces, NOT in the taper itself. So the taper on the spindle (male) should be slightly larger in diameter at the same distance from the mating face than the taper in the chuck (female) or whatever type of item you're mounting. So as you mount it there should be that slight gap between the faces that gets taken up when the cam locks are tightened.

For a one-off I would also just make the tapers mate well with a blued fit, not try to measure the angle. Use the spindle taper as the master, and make sure it's free of any dings, chips or dirt every time you test the fit.
