Dean Smith Grace Lathe Auction

For DSG lathe fans there is an auction of a 1/5th size model of a Heavy Duty 21 x 48 award winning lathe this month:

A very fine and multi award winning 1/5th scale exhibition model of a Dean Smith & Grace Heavy Du

At 1/5th scale this measures 12 1/2" high by 32 1/2" long or about the size of a South Bend lathe!

In the same auction there are lot upon lot of live steam locomotive and other engines, all first class build quality.

I hope they go to good homes.

Just when you think you're a pretty decent engineer something like this comes along and brings you right back down to earth. I take my hat off to the person who made that.

Barry Jordan had a bit of a speciality in building models of machine tools. All in 1/5 scale.

Even more amazing is that Barry was using model making as a distraction from a serious illness.

Whoever buys his collection, I hope I'll be able to see them in person one day.

Also interesting the huge difference in estimated bids between the lathe and the mill... guess the Bridgeport is more detailed...

Wasn't there a scale model Hardinge HLV-H auctioned off years ago that brought dissappointing (for the seller that is) money ? I vaguely recall the Hardinge was perhaps to a bit larger scale than 1/5 and useable ?

Should be 20% VAT, since it's in the UK. 6% commission seems to be on the low side for the auction houses.
