Electo polishing and passivating

First time I have had both specified on a drawing. It's a medical manifold made from 304 stainless. Is doing both processes common?

Place i worked for making small medical clamps, we had to do both as well(some grade ss cant remember). Then parts got a copper sulfate iirc? bath/test to determine if they were fully corrosion resistant.. little rust pits would show up if the passivate and polish wasnt done correctly.

If this is your first time doing medical, you better have your ducks in a row: material certs, heat treatment certs, dimensional documentation, etc. There is a reason that "just anybody" doesn't play in the medical playground. Best of luck to you.

Remember that medical manufacturer several years ago that omitted the ultrasonic cleaning from the spec? It saved them $1.50 each making the knee replacement. Then the cement wouldn't hold. Caused a lot of people a lot of pain and then they had to go back in and have them replaced. One of the few times in history that a lawyer did a lawsuit that wasn't a scam.

Electro-polishing is common in medical, food industry, high vacuum, high voltage applications and more. Relatively easy to do in shop, unless with large parts that require high currents and large baths.

Our firm used them for years on an aerospace product used for testing oxygen compatibility. They did a great job for us and were very good on paperwork and certs that we required. There are other firms that do the same processes that may be closer to you.
