I have 13x48 LeBlond lathe that seems to be seeping oil from the spindle. I read somewhere this issue can be corrected by tightening the spindle up by turning the spanner lock nut in the gearbox. I have the manual for this lathe and have taken pictures of the spindle diagram which I’ll share here. There appears to be a spindle oil slinger but no seal that I can see. Being the cautious type, thought I would ask the experts on this forum before jumping in with both feet.

No "expert" here

Part # 21 (31?) is slinger. No seal usually in USA engine lathes. I have a later LeBlond print on the 16" Heavy Duty - it has slinger out front and uses the normal LABYRINTH deal to direct oil back into head stock - rather that any sort of rubbing seal

Tightening up the nut may add to preload on bearings, but it is unlikely to do any thing about the oil

FIRST thing good to know for sure is that it DOES NOT have TOO MUCH oil in it. If too much it will run right out since no rubbing seals

It is slightly over the line in the sight glass. But I caused that after recently changing the oil in the headstock. It was actually seeping before the oil change so I can’t say that’s the issue.
