Mine is not the same but it does not have in between positions. The handle barely moves if you try to pull it back between. I forget what is inside it as i have not taken it apart and cleaned it in years. If yours is like mine it indexes very accurately. Holding .0005 on the diameter when indexing is a piece of cake, closer is not hard.
