Heat Treating 4140 thin Rings

I have some 4140 Rings 6" od 1/4" wall 1/8"Thick Heat Treated to 48 rc.

We want to finish machine Grind to 1/8" thick and Heat Treat.

Will it help to tie a stack with wire in 3-4 places to minimize warping.

Have 1000 pc to run. The first time that we ran them ,we spent quite a bit of time straightening them.

Nature of the beast...not much you can do about it warping, it's squirmy stuff.

With a 1000 to run I'd take the time to make a fixture to stack them into a cylinder say 10 to 20 at a time with end plates and bolts between them to hold everything flat during quenching. You need to coat the rings with lime before stacking or they will weld together. The rings touching the plates won't quench properly - so pick 2 as sacrificial parts and use them for all the cycles. Make sure the plates have big holes so the quench media can get to the ring ID.

If you rough machine them and then have them annealed and normalized they will move around much less after final machining and heat treat.
