I am refurbishing an Enco lathe and just cleaned out the lower gearbox. From the drive train I cannot see how the threading leadscrew is driven without the carriage drive gear turning. The carriage drive has a ball clutch but I can't believe the design is for that to slip when turning threads. Can someone with experience in this lathe help me understand this?

The carriage drive DOES turn when the leadscrew is going. That's why there is a mechanism in the apron to lock out the carriage drive when the halfnuts are engaged, and visa versa.
