Help with tensioning belt on 1940s south bend lathe

I received an old 1940s south bend lathe and have been getting good use out of it. The current configuration has a fixed distance between the pulleys which does not enable the belt to be tensioned. I have been periodically trimming the leather belt to increase tension but would like to come up with some way to adjust the distance between the pulleys to improve this process. Any advice? I’ve scoured the internet to see if anyone else has a lathe with the style of configuration but can’t seem to find anything.

If you can add a jack pulley then it can be adjusted . How is the belt removed? A shorter belt may work.

Pull the spindle out and install an automotive serpentine belt, works much better.
This needs to be in the South Bend forum below.
