I recently purchased a 13” x 40” engine lathe. I cannot seem to find any info on the web related to spindle speeds and i don’t understand where to find information on the sandvik website on what type of inserts are for roughing / finishing . And help and info would be much appreciated thank you for your time!

Buy a old world textbook on machining ....these books are on fleabay for a buck or two in new condition......Or view the zillions of machining titles on Utube.....For hobby work ,the carbide grades used for ally seem to suit ,very suitable stuff off Banggood.......Also suggest you peruse some hobby machine forums ,where beginners are made welcome.

Remove the word "beginner" from your title.

Get a full size edition of the Machinery Handbook.

It is more value to the forum that another user signs up. More users generates higher prices for advertising.
You might be a beginner today, in a few years you might be teaching a few things to some of the old geisers here ...

In forward speeds you can turn the spindle with the T wrench in the chuck..good to practice doing that until you get used to the control levers so you have less chance of breaking anything.

First be sure all the places have oil , and if a plane bearing machine both sides are taking oil.

Don't spray can clean it but oil rag with a little spirts added clean'

Don't air hose blow it but hand pick out the chips where they are.

Don't wire brush the hand wheels because that rounds off the nice looking numbers.

Buy a copy of South Bend How to Run A lathe only 5 bucks or so and worth the money.
Yes you can free down load a copy but better to have one so you can read it cover to cover.

Oh don't mention the name if it is a china or the like...but good to buy a manual for it, 30 bucks or so.

First off pick up a fish tail gauge, a 10 loop(small magnifying glass)and a drill chuck for the tail stock.

Pull the the power if having any kids that might get near it.

QT Rons: [Get a full size edition of the Machinery Handbook.] a lot of use full stuff on measuring threads and much more. will save a lot of time looking all over the net..might cost $30 off ebay but good to have.

Most lathes have speeds listed on a plate somewhere. Does it have quick change gear box or lose gears?

welcome to PM

That way you can see how far you can launch it. If you get really good you can launch it all the way across the shop.

With reading your How to Run a lathe pick simple accessories you have the equipment for and make those projects..
Agree the hobby site are Ok to good ..but they answer question with limited knowledge and try to teach more advanced than their skills. To buy a lathe projects book might be better, yes if there is such a book.. Found it!
The on a post tap wrench is a good project. you make a post that sticks out of your tail stock, For a small lathe you can use a 3/8 rod perhaps 6" long. Then tale a chucking tap wrench tap and make an extension that is perhaps 5" long with the opposite end having a hole that accepts the 3/8 rod sticking out of your tail stock droll chuck.. This is a very handy tool and gives the first basic lathe skills. I will try to find one on yutube for you to see.

Cant beat a few good books for better advice. Start with the basics..Best 30 bucks you will spend.
