How do you mate an existing rack with new gear

I need to purchase a gear that fits an existing rack. The pitch of the rack is .250. How does that number relate to a pinion gear where the gear pitch is listed in much larger numbers such as 8,10,12?
Thanks

Divide the DP into "pi"

3.14159 / 8 = .3926" circular pitch

Nearer what you want is 12 DP

3.14159 / 12 = .261"

When you say .250 pitch that means .250 from one tooth to the same point on the next tooth

See the "P" in the thumbnail (thanks to the Boston Gear page)

Of course if the rack pitch is .250 from tooth to tooth (as per Johns drawing), then you need a .250'' Circular Pitch (CP) mating gear

Thanks Limy
You are from a beautiful part of the country. I remember as a young lad, camping with the family in the lovely countryside. Norfolk Downs I think it was called.
