So this morning I get to the shop and there is one of my 2 trees laying across the driveway to get to the parking lot...

Thankfully my cleaning guy/handyman got there 2 minutes before me... (He was picking up my cans and a few buckets of useless aluminum, scraps them and puts the money in his grand daughters college account).. He helped me pull the tree enough that I could get into the parking lot.. It was a tough pull.. I have new tires, and they aren't so new anymore, they actually look like they've been used.. I think that is the first time I've had that truck in a 4 wheel drift, granted it would have been a lot more fun at more than 100ipm, but a 4 wheel drift none the less...

So I call up my outdoor weed specialist that cares of the yard around the shop, and helps inside when he can..(He's a head trauma, 60yo, stole a lettuce truck about 40 years ago, chased by the cops, and hit a pecan tree and ended up with the engine block of the lettuce truck on his chest).

He's out of minutes on his phone. so I sit down for a bit and have a Diet Dr. Pepper before I go to find Eddy (he lives in the neighborhood across the street).. I didn't have a gas can here at the shop or my snips, and I know he has a gas can with 2 stroke mix and some nice snips.. So I'm enjoying my Dr. Pepper, and he knocks on the door.

"WTF happened" as my dogs are jumping on him and licking him.. They like Eddy, they think he's cool (somebody has to)..

So we head to his house, grab his gas, and his snips, make a detour to the Pic Qwik and grab some beer (just in case :rolleyes5: )..

Eddy starts trimming off the little branches with his nice snips and I head inside to fire up my POS Poulan.. Top her up with gas, tighten the chain, and check the bar oil.. Its empty and I have no bar oil.. Hmm.. F'it.. If people can use bar oil on their mills, I can use waylube on my bar... I think??? So here is the question, because you hvae to have a question!!.. Did I do any damage to my POS chainsaw by using waylube instead of bar oil???

That should be the end of the post.. But I'll tell the end of the story... Its not all that exciting.

I didn't mind using the waylube since the local oil place is dumping chevron and blowing out their waylube for $35 a bucket. I've bought 7 of them so far.. I have to be down that way in a few weeks, and if they have any left, I'll buy another 3 buckets for $115 even... Taxes and everything.

Chainsaw fires up real nice.. Go out, cut a bunch of stuff, and shut it off.... Clear a bunch of stuff, play a game on my phone for a few, and the damn chainsaw won't fire up.. Spark, fuel, won't run, even on starting fluid.. I call my cleaning guy, since he's the only one that has really used it the past few years and he said, "Yeah, she's a bitch, fires and runs, does great, won't start again, let it sit for a day, fires right up"..

Shit.. So Eddy's friend is out there yacking at Eddy... And helping him a little, he's older, probably in his 70's... Doesn't have great english, nice guy, recently lost his wife... And he offers to go up the street and get another one of their friends, who actually burns fire wood (and there isn't a lot of free wood in southern New Mexico). and has a chainsaw...

So now we have a 60 year old head trauma.. A 70 year old retired guy that isn't fluent in english and an 80 something year old that understands enough english, but won't speak it. And a chainsaw with a dull chain that runs...

GOOD TIMES!!! We were having fun, it was a holiday, so F'it.

I know enough about chainsaws and trees that you cut from the side that is going to spread.. Apparently, at that point, I was the only person in Hatch that knew that... I actually went inside and got my car jack, and we had to use it more than once..

I won't mention the time where the saw was stuck, and they cut the only leg of the tree that was keeping it from falling over sideways, or the fact that I was in the middle of the mess, pushing to try and get the saw out, and once it came out, they kept cutting, and the whole tree rolled and I tweaked the shit out of my knee.. It didn't feel good, it feels OK now, but I'm a little scared of what its going to feel like in the morning..

And then Pauly.. Pauly lives up the street and occasionally at his Mother's house down the street.. (Hatch is SMALL, 1700 people, everybody knows EVERYBODY).. Pauly pulls up.. Pauly cuts trees for a living, Pauly doesn't work cheap which is why I didn't go and find him at first, but I've helped him out a few times recently..

Pauly sees the tree and zips his truck around in a second.. And says.. Need some help? And I say as long as it doesn't cost me much.. And he says don't worry about it, I'll tear this thing apart in no-time.. So he grabs the POS that actually ran and starts cutting, for about 30 seconds.. And then goes to his truck, which really wasn't a truck. It was POS Mitsubishi SUV, with aluminum riveted to the side, and pulls out a really nice chainsaw.. After he crawled through the inside to open the hatch.

A Stihl. Somewhere between a 32 and a 36 inch bar, Big F'r... One pull.. **Vroom**.. He busted that tree up like he had a light saber.. It was beautiful.. Nice sharp chain, and he KNEW which way things were going to fall, and he only got stuck up once, and it didn't require a car jack to fix..

Pauly left, and we loaded it all up and headed up the road to dump it all off. Eddy's friends truck was full, and my truck was damn near close to the bump stops..

Crisis averted, and it was a holiday, so who cares that I wasted the day.. This is all I have left to deal with, and its not light.. The trash truck can get in to grab the dumpster tomorrow and mail lady can get to the mail box.. F'it.. Its Beer:30...

The way oil as bar oil is ok, maybe even better than true bar oil. The stickiness of way oil is made for the application. Just a matter of viscosity. As far as the as the starting problem, I have seen cases where the magneto gets hot, and either from a bad coil or capacitor, the voltage under pressure won't jump the plug. Let it cool and takes right off.

Poulan, the proper name, Pull on. Cause you pull on it and pull on it and it never starts. I used drain oil from oil changes for bar oil, works fine, at least it did in my pull on, when it would run. I have a Stihl now so I use bar oil. The Stihl is an animal, and starts in 1-2 pulls every time from cold and 1 when hot. It's a lovely little machine.

My dad has run used engine oil as bar oil my whole life. Never had an issue.

Apparently Stihl has a fuel injected saw out now. Maybe that's old news, but I just heard about it a few weeks ago.

You might also be getting vapour lock from a hot carby, having a 1/4" thick phenolic spacer between the carby and the cylinder will fix that. I have an old Stihl 012 on the bench: the nikasil plating on the bore is damaged. The local Stihl Dealer wants $312 for a new cylinder or I can buy a new Stihl chainsaw for $250.....I'm tempted to bore and sleeve it out of spite.

FWIW in over 40 years I've NEVER used anything other than way lube as chainsaw bar oil - why? I hear you ask, simple way lube I could get for next to nix, bar oil was merchant pricing :D

P.S. Neither Stihl, Husky, Homelite or Danarm ever complained .

You save the bar oil for the machinery ways....

Bob why not just use automotive drain oil????
had a fella bring his dolmar to me to have it worked on what a mess when i cracked the case open!!!!!

I have used chainsaws on and off for 40 years, actually cut firewood for a living for almost 2 years and then part time for a couple more. I have NEVER put bar oil in a chainsaw. I have used motor oil, new and used, used
automatic transmission fluid, pretty much anything oily. Never any issues. As for the guy who stole the lettuce truck are you sure that accident caused head trauma? Are you sure he didn't have head trauma before stealing a lettuce truck? I don't think anyone thinking clearly would risk jail to steal a truck full of lettuce.

Most chainsaw bar oil is mineral based, fairly safe for the environment.
Some is vegetable based.
Used motor oil is not good choice if you care about the environment. It takes very little oil to pollute alot of water. You may think that its not very much but it adds up quick, everytime you fill with fuel you fill with bar oil. I know how much oil I go thru in a season and I wouldnt dump that much oil onto my land.

Just one quart of oil can contaminate up to a quarter million gallons of drinking water or cause an oil slick almost 2 acres in size.

Last I checked I kept my chainsaw out of the creek and lakes when I was out in the forest cutting wood.

motor oil is mineral oil. Whats the difference besides used motor oil being a bit contaminated by carbon (who cares) and some trace metals from your engine (who cares) and some detergents (who cares)?

I don't litter or pollute more than normal but thik of all the nasty black oil used in making an asphalt road which washes right off and down the nearest ditch, river, ocean. a bit of bar oil is not a drop in the bucket.
