Hey All,

I need to replicate an arbor for a small tool grinder. So far all I know is I can't cut the old one with a file, but a pipe wrench dug into the running surfaces, so its probably case hardened .010" deep or so.

There is a 13" long 46mm diameter.
28mm 4" long stub on each end.

The head clamps on the 46mm diameter. It rotates slowly on the 28mm diameters, in little carbide V blocks, maybe a 1" long line of contact on each side.
CBN wheel so not a huge amount of grit on the running surface, and the coolant cycles through a filter.

1) Whats the max rockwell you can get on induction hardened 4140? We have some 4140 induction hardened chrome plated shafting that seems up in the 60-62rc area, but thats just a guestimate.

2) Whats the wear resistance of 4140 induction hardened to 55-58rc compared to 1080 hardened up to 62-64rc?

you know as soon as you heat treat any of that stuff, your shaft isn't going to be straight. I make grinding wheel arbors out of pre hardened steel, and mount the adapter with green locktite, and have never had a problem with this method
