Hello everyone
I purchased some boxes of tooling and lathe accessories recently. In the lot were some expanding mandrels. There are 2 different shank diameters on them. Both sizes have tapers on the shank and they aren't threaded on the inside for an expansion screw or anything. At first glance I figured they were made to fit a morse taper (Morse 4 on the larger one and Morse 3 on the smaller). They are very similar in size to a morse taper but they don't fit snug. A couple of the mandrels are still in the original plastic bag. Sizes written on the bag are "1x1 -210", "1×1-1/2 -210" on the smaller size and "2×1-1/2 -425" on the larger ones. One bag says "Mr. Toolman" I assume the manufacturer or vendor but no part numbers on any of them.
1) Do I need a special collet, adapter or chuck to use these? I tried a 5c collet adapter for the larger size but it was too large for the larger mandrels to fit it.
2) are the expanding screws and hardware for these commercially available? I tried searching the Web but other than a few of the same "mr. toolman" mandrels for sale on that large online auction website i couldn't find very much. Nothing on MSC either.
3) do the mandrels need to be drilled and tapped for expanding screws?
As always. Thank you
Martin
