I'm starting to tool up a lathe with an Aloris CXA toolpost. For general purpose turning, I've always used a 3/4" or 1" stick tool in a quick-change holder. I see that they also make integrated holders that hold a standard insert. For example Diamond Turning & Facing Tool CXAD-80 or Profiling Tool Holder CXA-115

It seems like it should be a bit stiffer without the extra interface in the way, but I've never seen these used before, so I imagine they aren't that popular.

Any opinions?

I have one BXA holder for a trigangular insert. the tool tip[ can not stick out very far past the tool block. I would say it can not go deeper then 1/2" max groove depth before the body would rub.

If you damage the seat in a stick tool, you replace just the stick.

The integrated one one would be a lot more expensive to replace.

When cheap standard holders are $20.00 it would be hard to justify $300. Besides I don't like them for the reason awander mentioned and the fact that a stick tool holder allows some adjustability for different jobs on the fly and use any type insert stick with just one holder.
