Is there some reason why this head can not be used as a general purpose dividing head?
I've seen people who want to get rid of there's because they also got rig of the K&T miller.
Is it only useful on the K&T machine?

In general, they were STANDARD equipment when you bought a new UNIVERSAL horizontal mill - MADE to be driven via gearing from table screw - for the express intent of enabling the machine to cut helices and spirals

Yes, you can keep them around as indexers

K&T thought enough of their over all capabilities to publish a MANUAL for them - which describes how the dividing head interfaces with the MACHINE and the equipment dedicated to the dividing head

I've used a Van Norman dividing head on my K&T and Bridgeport mills for many years and the dividing head does not seem to care which machine its attached to, and the machines seem to play nice with the dividing head so . . . . . .
