Morning everyone. I've been in search of a good lathe, this will be my first machine tool. My little brother has been putting the word out and he called me last night. An older gentleman he knows is looking to divest himself of his lathe. It's an A-Trump 1336C and is in very good condition.

I'm not familiar with this brand, what all can you folks tell me before I buy this? I did get a couple pictures sent, but they're crappy cell phone pics. Only real good one is the number plate. But this could be a very good deal for someone (me) who wants a lathe but not a little hobby machine. If I buy it, it comes with tooling, fixtures, stock, the whole nine yards. The current owner hasn't ran it in a couple years, wants it gone, but wishes to see it go to someone who will appreciate it.

What do you all think? For the $1500 he's asking, its a steal. But is it something I'll be happy with? Let me know....

Thank you,

Rick

McKenna site indicates they are made by Extron in Taiwan.

Thereafter, "Condition, condition, condition...", but yeah - hard to go wrong when there is ALSO tooling & c.

....and the price as about the same as a good set of tires.

Monarchist, thank you, that was a lot of good info at those links. That said, for the price, the included tooling, and everything else, I think I have a deal here I can't pass up. Maybe I'll outgrow it in a few years, but between now and then, I think this will be a very good first lathe for me.

As for condition, I've got some crappy cell phone pics that show it to be in very good shape. No rust, its been kept oiled, even if it hasn't been used much. Oh, and the owner is insisting I come look it over before I commit to the sale, but he's also agreed that if I want it, it can sit until spring so I can get my garage finished before I go get it.

I'll post pics here when I get it home and installed.

For that price, if you plan to stay around that size, it is probably worth it just for the extra stuff. Chucks, tooling, toolpost, centers etc can easy add up to more then the base machine tool cost.
