I did search but found broken links. I have a forged spring steel bar about 1.5" diameter. I would like to turn it down to about 1.25? can this be done with carbide tooling in a lathe or do I need to grind it? Softening and retempering is not in the cards. It is about 30" long so It will fit fine in my lathe. Accuracy is not critical at all.

I don't see why you couldn't. I'd go drag a file across it. Spring steel will probably be tough but shouldn't be hard enough to be like brittle or have a problem cutting it with carbide. Wouldn't think?

In the toolroom I worked in one job was machining flat spring steel which we did with carbide. They'd wear out faster but did the job. It should work for you, adjusting feeds, speeds and DOC for what's feasible on your machine.

Depends on your lathe. Heavy 10 it will be a long process. Powerturn or similar no problem. Depends on hardness as well, not all springs alike.
