Machining Small Shaft

What would be the best way to machine the long flat on this shaft? Material is 316SS.
Small endmill, conventional mill it from the supported end towards the end with the hole with the remaining shaft material resting in a V?

I'd leave a 1/4" diameter stub on the small end, to clamp onto and to be cut off after the flat is milled.

If you have trouble with the "long" end you could always add a clamp after milling it part-way. Kinda depends on how many you want to do..

Looks like swiss work to me; finish the end, then pull it back to the bushing and cut the flat as it feeds through.

IME, that flat is going to look like a dorito no matter what you do.

Give it a try - it won't cost you much in time or material. It might not stay perfectly flat, but it might be good enough. I've cut similar features in 304L and had very little warp. Certainly not like CRS.

If allowed, 303 is easier to cut.
