magnetic table- alternate uses?

I have a small mag table from a scrapped surface grinder.
What kinds of things can be done with it other than holding parts for surface grinding?
Anybody done something quite unusual and want to share?
Hopefully this info could be useful to anyone with a mag table sitting around not getting used.....

I recently acquired a CNC mill and wondered if there ever was a job that could be done with the mag table. I can't see it holding any part well enough but I just don't know.

I’ve used them on the mill for large plates, used on my bench for polishing, used them on the spark eroders, flat and up at 90 degrees.

You could mount it to the wall in the kitchen and use it for storing cast iron frying pans ...

I have an old one that came off a surface grinder. I use it for welding setups. It holds everything in place very nicely so you can tack your whatsiz together.

I have used a small mag chuck on both a manual and cnc mill many times. The cnc jobs had fixture plates with pins to stop sliding. Fixture design takes thought to avoid trapping chips.

You could use it to hold odd shape parts for inspection purposes.

When you say “large plates” what size range is large?

How does the holding force of a mag chuck compare to a vacuum chuck? Theoretical max for vac is 14.5 psi, usually less in practice.

With mild steel that's at least as thick as the pole piece separation, you should be able to get 60N/cm^2 or better. That's a bit more than 85psi.

They work well for slag removal and sanding on sheet metal parts with an angle grinder. I have seen places keep one by their plasma table for that purpose.

That is a usage that I did not consider but of course would work very well. Unobstructed access to all four edges definitely speeds things.

I used a lever type mag chuck on a surface grinder to hold a tapered gib still while scraping, the work light on the machine was also helpful.
