Need advice on setting up for metal punching

I’d like to convert the punching fixture shown into a taller one that would accept some of the various types of punch/die sets I have, see just a few samples of some of the types. Never have done any metal punching, almost totally ignorant on this except for some things found on the web. There’s only about 3 in. Of vertical clearance inside the fixture and I need at least double that even for the shortest punch/die I have. I have some 12 in. Danly corner posts I could probably swap out for the 6.5 in. Posts now installed. I didn’t just go ahead and do that yet because this being new to me, I don’t know if that’d work out. I know there are more parts I need to make for the fixture. If there are any books or websites or videos I should check, pls advise.

You didn't mention what you plan on powering this set up with or the thickness you plan on punching. The tooling you show is designed to fit a "Thick" turret, That means the turret does all the guiding of the punch holder in relation to the die holder. What kind of guide were you thinking about? You weren't thinking of bolting the punch to the fixture, were you? You want to use interchangeable tooling? The long punch with the spring on it has the stripper punch holder, you haven't mentioned what your plans for a stripper include. Good luck, but I wouldn't do it.

Thx, we’ll I don’t even know enuf about the subject to answer most of the questions. This is to be a self-training, progressive project, not for production. So the first model probably won’t have a stripper, it’ll just push the punch thru say 1/8” mild steel with objective of keeping the elements aligned and not damaging them. We have several hyd. Presses 25-200 tons so we’ll pick maybe a 4-poster for this.

You will need some sort of stripper. even the little paper hole punches have em. It doesn't need fancy bushings or moving parts.

Thx, I’m just looking for easiest way to try some metal punching which may be to fix up the Mubea Ironworker mod. 350-600 to punch as designed. I need to make the missing 1/2 of the yellow thing, stripper I guess, then buy/make/modify some punches for it. I do have the manual portion which covers punching. I have no punches made by or for Mubea.

Bardan Supply in IL has bunches of punches for my Mubea, reasonably, enough so that I can afford buy several round punch/die sets and proceed with my punching familiarization. Odd shapes cost more. They are going to check with OEM in Germany for a replacement stripper half, but that I can make in 1/2 day nice and 2 hrs. rough, so I’ll get one either way.

My Mubea is a 44 ton fly wheel operated machine. Your bottom die holder looks similar to mine but my top punch has a large nut that clamps the punch to the ram.

Thx, by accident I found what appears to be same set for less

Mubea H-1 style 12-set round tooling kit – JR Machinery Online Store

But I checked the machine and noted the model no. Stenciled on it “HPS 350.” I’ll need to do some further checking since there are several models containing “350” but some use all H1 tooling and some reportedly use BF-10 punch and H-1 die.

Unfortunately the ram cavity doesn’t seem to match any kind of punch I’ve found in searching for Mubea punches.

Do you have a collet nut? The threaded cavity is new to me, normally a threaded stem. The die block could just be nicked, 1 13/16 die should fit with zero play, but not be tight- looser is better than tight. new die blocks are never fun because the dies are to tight.

there used to be a mubea parts and service company in the USA- I guess Bardan took them over. They should have the nut, for example. Punches and dies are available for your machine from all three of the big punch makers in Cleveland.

you will be much better off just buying tooling that fits the Mubea, rather than trying to adapt oddball stuff. And if you are halfway careful, punches and dies will last you years and years.

Thx, yes Bardan has the ext thread collar nut I need, most Mubea use int the nut so it took a while to sort that out. Only $150, and no I don’t want to make one. I’ll get one of the kits with a doz punches and dies. The correct 1 piece stripper is $350. From Germany, so I will fix up the partial one I have.
