Need HELP: Wells Index 747 High/Low not working

I have an older 747 that only works in the “low” position. When I put into “neutral” and turn the motor on then the motor spins, but the chuck does not spin - just as it’s supposed to. When I put the head into the “high” position then it still acts like the mill in in “neutral”. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Try pushing the shifter knob beyond the detent hole and see if it engages. The pics you put up are too small to read and I can't find my 747 manual to look. Did the problem start suddenly, did you buy it this way, slowly got worse, etc?

I think the above advice is good. Someone at some point drilled my 847 for a new detent beyond it's original one, probably for the same reason. It currently works in either detent in high range, so I'm guessing whatever was worn out or bent got fixed.

I’ll give that a shot. It was this way when I bought the mill. I have a VFD and have been able to make due as is, but I need some high RPM for my next project. So I got to figure this out. If I need to drill a new hole then I will. I’ll try to get a better picture too.

Put a tool in the spindle and turn it as you try the lever. The lever has a set screw and a taper pin holding it on. I think the factory used the setscrew to get it adjusted then drilled the pin hole. On my 810 CNC I removed the pin, loosened the setscrew and adjusted to get even engagement up and down then drilled a new hole.

I've got a 747 manual scanned into PDF form - if that would help, PM me with an email address (the PM feature here doesn't allow for sending attachments so far as I know).
