    Homebrew,

What number on your serial number card is the S/N?

I need to order one for my 645 Index mill.

No I didnít order the serial card yet, I need a couple other little things for it so figured Iíll order it then. On a good note though, I got it all back together and itís a mill now instead of just a drill press! Iím excited to start using it now!

    55-4163
From my understanding they used the “inventory number” internally and the machine didn’t receive its actual serial number until the brass tag was affixed/stamped.

My serial card actually spans across at least 2 or 3 other machines(inventory#4904/4905/5329) and ended up permanently linked to the serial number 4163.

I believe my machine (serial 4163) was inventory #5329 as that’s the last entry on my serial card.

I might try to order cards number 4904 and 5329 and it’s very intriguing to me that my card says “see #4904” on it.

I feel like there was a delay in building the machine twice and so the original inventory machines went on to other buyers until my card/order was completed finalizing on inventory machine 5329 getting the 55-4163 designation.

Interesting the weights kept changing too, farther enforcing my belief the original machines came and went as my card/order was delayed (payment issues or change in specifications?)

My Super 55 is marked "Super 55". Looks like this.

    Nice shop!
The block knob handle top left of your super 55, is that a spindle brake!?

The regular 55 has no spindle brake, only a spindle lock that shoved a pin up though the forward-most pulley.

    Thanks.

Yes, a spindle brake. Very handy; I use it all the time.

Mine don’t have that either. Wonder if mine is a early model super? It’s had a different motor put on it to and doesn’t seem quite powerful enough.

Iíve seen examples with a black ďflat buttonĒ style you push with your hand and some with the lever style shown here, It seems index was playing it fast and loose when building these bad boys, they changed things frequently, in the same year even
