I have been off the PM for a few days ( severe withdrawal !! ) because my Norton AntiVirus 2005 is giving me hell !!

Is there any reasonably priced software that does not freeze the mouse every 5 minutes or so ( mice are for monkeys, & I hate them,..the mouse, not the monkeys !! )

Regards from Melbourne,Australia,

AAB

AAB, I use Norton 2005 on the recommendation of my computer geek friend. He tells me that Norton is one of the best but not to use windows firewall so i use Kaspersky on his advice.

Seems to be working well.

I had some problems with Norton some years ago; it slowed things up quite noticeably.

I switched to Zone Alarm and I like it.

I also use AVG and Spyware Doctor and am happy with them.

If you change from Norton a simple Uninstall will not do; there is a Removal Tool on the Symantec site.

I am using Norton 2006, but only for the AV protection. Use Zone Alarm Pro for software firewall. Norton will slow my system when doing background updates, but no problems with freezing any component.

Every pc I have ever bought new the first thing I deleted was Nortons. It slows the machine down so much. AVG is fine. Kaspersky if you're a heavy porn site surfer. Personally I don't use anything.

Oh ya the best thing to do is switch to a linux system.

I Do not like Norton's are Mcaffee.

Norton's and Macaffee where both squirrelly.

I use Zone alarm and AVG.

I use the free versions, and have had not problems. I am a hobby not a business.

Just do a search in Google.

I chucked the Norton I bought in favour of the Free AVG. AVG, leaps and bounds better.
1) Faster scans and doesn't tax the system as much as Norton.
2) Updates daily
3) much higher % of finding and stopping trojans, viruses etc..Norton in my experience didn't stop many malicious software.

Get AVG Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus, both are free and don't have evaluation period use only.

SpySweeper also good but only 14 days free evaluation period.I'll pop over to Best-Buy and get it soon.

CounterSpy ,has a free trial version.Just found and deleted a KeyLogger.

Ad-Aware, Free unlimited.

Crap Cleaner, deletes unused files, extensions
etc..Free unlimited.

SpyBot S&D, good.Free unlimited.

Oh and turn off 'Remote Registry'.
Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Services
Find Remote registry in the list and right click then choose disable.

Below quote is from Microsoft explaining what happens when you turn it off.

"Enables remote users to modify registry setting on this computer. If this service is stopped, the registry can only be modified by users on thsi computer. If this service is stopped, any services that explicity depend on it will fail to start."

I read about turning this off from an internet security website.Have never had a problem due to turning it off.

You're not the only one I have heard that is not happy with Norton anti-virus.

A friend who is an IT guy switched me over to PC-cillin. It warns you about unsafe or dangerous webpages or things happening in the background. also, if you are on a cable modem, spend the the $50.00 and get a router which has a built in hardware firwall. I don't trust the MS firewall, to me its like letting the fox run the henhouse.

I replaced Mcafee with Zone Alarm a couple of years ago, but he turned his nose up at Z.A. - he knows more about this stuff than I do.

I use Avast anti virus, free download for personal use, auto update, can be 3 - 4 times day, it suits me and stopped my problems.

Take care. Sami.

Linux

A hardware firewall is handy I would never trust windows to secure itself, code red and mssql bugs come to mind

I use Norton - just the AV not the bloated internet security - on 5 PC's and have been very happy with it.

I have never noticed a problem with it slowing things down (although apparantly others have), and I do a lot of complex 3D modelling and assemblies.

However, I have heard very good things about AVG, plus its free.

I am sold on AVG. Now have the whole package. Used the free version for several years. Norton and Mcaffe did not do the job for me. Charles

AVG and Zonealarm........

bad stuff ROUTINELY got through Norton/Symantec at the old work..... But yet the software was working, as evidenced by the huge performance hit it produced.

I am firmly of the opinion that Norton is poor, and is also a major TARGET of bug-writers....

McAfee is simply and clearly, A VIRUS in and of itself. Don't go there.

I use the free AVG version, seems really good.

I had the free version of Avast about 3-4years ago and I didn't like it much, maybe the paid version works good. I know there was a few times it "found something " but told me it couldn't do anything. It also sometimes found normal perfectly fine files and said they were corrupted... blah

I had put norton 2005 on the computer I had before this new one. It slowed it down so much, took forever to start up, arg. I don't like Norton at all. I wouldn't be surprised if it was what killed that computer one day.

I have have used everything mentioned above, all have their problems and small quirks. I discovered NOD32, installed it about a year ago, not a problem since. NOD32 has a very small footprint doesn't seem to slow anything down noticeably. It is very unobtrusive, so much so, that I occasionally have to check and see that it is still there and running. Only drawback, I don't think they have a free version.

What you might be running into is not an AV problem but the Windows Indexing service. I ran into this a few years back at work. The "freeze" was because Windows wanted to reindex the entire hard drive every few minutes and it would swipe all the processor time it could lay its hands on to do it.

You can go into Windows Explorer, right click on a drive to bring up properties, and in XP on the General tab at the bottom you'll see a check box for "allow indexing service to index this disk for fast file searching". Uncheck that and it see if that helps. If not, you may need to go in to Control Panel,Administrative tools, services, and disable the indexing service.

Some AV programs are pretty pushy too. You may even be running into a combination of AV and Indexing.

cheers,
Michael

AVG (Grisoft.com)

Free version is available but it's worth the $39 or so for the two machine license and at least daily updates. It doesn't impose itself everywhere and try to take over the system, and works fine with the windoze XP firewall.
