Question OT- Camera gurus.... can I use a Sony wide angle lens on a Canon camcorder ?

Canon XA40 camcorder (2019 vintage) The official Canon wide angle attachment lens is part WAU-58. (58mm thread mount with .8x lens)

Would a Sony or whatever work (i.e. be just as clear image) as long as the mount was the same, and lens power similar....Or are there differences in the lens mount position in it's frame that messes up the focal point and causes one to have to have the official Canon adapter ?

(The WAU-58 is $500 to $600 ...whereas used generic 58mm .7x can be had for as low as 10 bucks !)

Google "back focus" for information on one complication you may encounter.

For $10 I’d give it a try. I think it will work.
