OT Casting an Ant Colony

final product looks like a christmas tree. I guess there is good venting for all the chambers. I guess the little water in the ants did not cause a big steam explosion. I have seen similar tree like forms from fused dirt at a lighting strike. I think it is called a fulgerite

This came through my Google+ page today:

Alex Wild originally shared:

Lots of people are sharing this story about a guy who makes aluminum casts of fire ant nests, and a few people have emailed me about it, so I've assembled my thoughts here:

? Commercial Myrmecology and Anthill Art

The short version: this technique has been around for a while, it was created by myrmecologist Walter Tschinkel, and it'd have been nice if this new guy at least mentioned the source.

Does PETA know about this?

Cool stuff.

Fire ants are my friends! Nature's little rototillers creating beautiful friable biologically rich topsoil. Other than that I can see how they can be a real nuisance, like poison ivy, yellow jackets and other nasties.

Much better to turn their habitat into a metal sculpture than to spray the colonies with pesticide and to leave them alone if found on public land.
